Charlotte Performer Wants To Give The National Anthem New Meaning At All-Star Game

Charlotte’s own R&B star Anthony Hamilton will perform the national anthem at the 68th annual NBA All-Star Game Sunday. Hamilton said he hopes he can put a new meaning on the Star Spangled Banner.

“It’s a big game, a big moment here for Charlotte, North Carolina," Hamilton said. "For me, being a native here and being able to be the face and the voice of the national anthem... I can represent for my people who had some struggle at accepting that song again.”

The national anthem, of course, has been a source of contention — particularly in the NFL, with several players kneeling in protest of social injustice. Hamilton said he wants his performance to make people feel good.

“You know, with Colin Kaepernick and all that stuff — the song has taken a hit," the singer said. "But there are still people who died and fought, so I just want to acknowledge them while I’m singing. Hopefully, my soul will open up and people can feel that.”

Hamilton said he wants to sing as a proud American, while also taking a stand for people who are mistreated.

Another North Carolina native, rapper J. Cole, will perform during the game’s halftime show. He grew up in Fayetteville.
