Rawl Protests SC Primary Loss To Greene

A former state lawmaker who lost South Carolina 's Democratic U.S. Senate primary to an unknown, unemployed candidate is protesting the result. Alvin Greene's victory over Vic Rawl shocked South Carolina's political establishment. He didn't raise any money. He didn't have a web site. He didn't even campaign. Now, the Rawl campaign is challenging the results before the South Carolina Democratic Party. "This is really about the process and the integrity of the ballot in South Carolina ," says Rawl campaign manager Walter Ludwig. He says the campaign has received numerous complaints of voting irregularities. He fears there were failures in the electronic voting machines. Now, both the Greene campaign and Rawl must appear before the Democratic Party's executive Committee. The party's communications director says the committee can void the results and order a new election. That hearing is scheduled for Thursday. In any case, there's another candidate besides incumbent Republican Jim DeMint who hopes to benefit from this controversy. It's Green Party candidate Tom Clements. "Ironically, I think the situation may actually be good for democracy. I think it may open the door toward more parties participating in the process," Clements says. Clements says he's left his contact information with state Democratic party officials, hoping to get their support. But so far, they've ignored his efforts. WFAE attempted to contact Democratic Primary winner Alvin Greene, but his phone was busy for several hours Monday afternoon.
