The EQUALibrium Awards Gala will honor Charlotte area residents who have made outstanding contributions and impact in advancing issues of race and equity within our community.
The event will highlight the stories and achievements of these remarkable individuals who have devoted themselves to fostering inclusivity, dismantling systemic barriers and promoting equity and equality in our region.
The evening will feature engaging speakers, captivating performances and an awards ceremony that recognizes the honorees.

South Piedmont's Small Business Center, the Southwest Region of the Small Business Center Network, and Fifth Third Bank are giving you the opportunity to take a chance on yourself and compete to win $10,000, $5,000 or $2,500. Submissions for the 53 Ideas Pitch Competition will be accepted May 5 through May 31. Take action now and get your entry in before the deadline.
HERE'S HOW IT WORKS
Visit 53ideas.com between May 5 and May 31 to record, upload your 53-second pitch and complete an entry submission.
Learn in the beginning of June if judges select your idea as one of the top 53 entries. If so, you'll move on to the next pitch round and be one step closer to a shot for the top cash prizes.
Sign-up and participate in training to help you prepare for the next round of the competition and to further develop your idea.
During the week of July 8th pitch virtually before judges to try to secure a spot in the top 10.
Get $250 if your idea is selected as one of the top 10 and take advantage of coaching to help you perfect your pitch for the final round.
Pitch as a top 10 contestant in the final round to compete for $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500. The final pitch round will be in-person before judges and broadcast to an online audience this July.

Curtis is an award-winning journalist, columnist, and podcast host based in Charlotte, N.C., and Washington, D.C. She specializes in politics, culture, and race, with contributions to outlets such as NPR, Slate, and NBC News, and has received numerous prestigious awards throughout her career, including the Ernie Pyle Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists in 2022.

Our panelists, including Dena Diorio, Mecklenburg County Manager; Jennifer Fisher, Executive Director of Property Management & Regional Leader at Wells Fargo; and Dr. Cheryl Richards, CEO of Catapult Employers Association, will share their experiences, insights and factors influencing their decisions. From differing approaches to the nuanced considerations driving their strategies, we will delve into the practicalities and outcomes of returning to the office in today’s dynamic work environment.
The Jazz for All Educational Concert Series, featuring the Ziad Jazz Quartet, will educate and inspire appreciation for improvisational jazz music. Each month will feature a different artist’s music, and audience members will learn through performance and discussion about the artist and the history and significance of jazz as a music genre. January’s concert is a tribute to the music of Duke Ellington. Jazz For All is sponsored by Culture Blocks— a community partnership funded by Mecklenburg County.
