A public meeting will be held in Salisbury tonight to discuss a Confederate statue that was recently vandalized. Attendance is expected to be so high, the meeting location has changed to a larger venue for the anticipated crowd.
The topic of tonight’s public hearing is a monument that sits at a downtown intersection and was erected more than a century ago. It depicts the Greek goddess Fame holding a fallen Confederate soldier.
The monument was vandalized with paint in March.
The local NAACP has called for its removal. Salisbury City Attorney Graham Corriher stated in a memo that the City’s authority to relocate the monument is limited because of state law and also because of a resolution passed in 1908 granting the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who own the statue, the perpetual right to use the median where it stands.
Tonight’s meeting will be held at the Salisbury Civic Center from 6 to 8:15pm. Each speaker will be given three minutes. Speakers are not required to sign in.
