#BHMWTG Black History Storytime
"Storytelling has been a cultural preservation tool in the Black community for centuries. In celebration of Black History Month, we share a story that reflect the richness of our culture and kindles the imagination of young minds. Teaching artist Tiffany Bryant-Jackson will read Faith Ringgold’s Tar Beach, accompanied with the book's illustrations. Ms. Bryant-Jackson will ask questions and give additional information as she reads that allows children to make connections to the Black historical and cultural experience. Followed by the storytelling, little ones will create their own paper quilt with the patched symbols that were historically created as a coded language to navigate the Underground Railroad. Children and families can feel free to create a paper quilt by re-drawing or cutting out, pasting and coloring their favorite symbols, using any size and quilting pattern they would like. The suggested supplies for the paper quilts are below: Construction paper or printing paper, any color 2-3 Printouts of the quilt symbols (participants can also trace or redraw them) Glue sticks Scissors (with adult supervision) Crayons and/or color pencils On Friday February 12th at 10:00 am, please use this Zoom link to join the story time experience: https://ganttcenter.zoom.us/j/93543818807 https://www.dropbox.com/s/vlvaz5fcyfpdu7d/Quilt%20pdf.pdf?dl=0"
