May 23 Thursday
Join us for an evening with Rick and Dee Ray, pioneers of college sports broadcasting and founders of Raycom. The new book, Unstoppable: A Story of Love, Faith, and the Power Couple Who Ignited the College Sports Broadcasting Boom, tells how they led a revolution in television sports and set America on the path to frenzied fandom.
The Rays went on to save The Duke Mansion by becoming its last private owners and restoring it as a grand single-family home. They helped lead the effort to protect The Duke Mansion for generations to come by transforming it into a nonprofit bed and breakfast inn and meeting place.
Hear their remarkable story as only they can tell it. Seating is limited at this free event. Reserve your spot on Eventbrite .
This event is part of the Rosalie Reynolds Explore History! series, presented to the Community by Wells Fargo. The Duke Mansion is a nonprofit with proceeds being used to preserve and protect this community treasure.

“Rich from the Sea: Florida Native Americans’ Indigenous Wrecking in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries”Dr. Peter J. Ferdinando, Assistant Teaching Professor, Department of History, University of North Carolina at Charlotte
The Native Americans of Florida’s east coast exploited the resources of the Atlantic Ocean for centuries before European contact. Following the arrival of Europeans, they employed those same maritime skills to acquire shipwrecked goods, castaway peoples, and even parts of the shattered ships that washed ashore. They then modified and used such materials, and also traded them with other indigenous peoples, the Spaniards of St. Augustine, and passing European ships. Through Indigenous wrecking, these coastal peoples both resisted and participated in an emerging Atlantic World.
