The USDA will staff the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis as part of a $1 million dollar federal earmark. There have been reports that the money will be used to establish a USDA lab called a Human Nutrition Center . In fact, Congressman Larry Kissel made that announcement in a press release. But USDA spokeswoman Sandy Hays says that's not true. "They would actually be affiliated with one of our other existing human nutrition research centers. The most likely candidate would be the one here at Beltsville, Maryland, which is called the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center ," Hays says. In his press release, Kissell took sole credit for the $1 million earmark. However, Senators Kay Hagan and Richard Burr also sponsored the earmark legislation. But unlike Kissell, Senator Hagan gave credit to her colleagues in her press release. Burr didn't issue a release.
