Freestanding Emergency Department To Open In Fort Mill

Alex Olgin

A new freestanding emergency room will be opening in Fort Mill. Piedmont Medical Center broke ground on what will be a 17,000 square foot building just 20 minutes away from its hospital in Rock Hill.

This is the company’s first emergency department only facility. It’s separate from the hospital that PMC is trying to build in Fort Mill. That has been tied up in the courts for years.

PMC CEO Mark Nosacka said this freestanding emergency department is not a substitute for that hospital.

“We don’t see it as one replacing the other,” he said. “We see it as multiple quick access points for people so they can get access to high-level care faster.”

York County was one of the country’s fastest growing areas. Census numbers show between 2016 and 2017 it grew by 3.3 percent. Nosacka said PMC is trying to match the growth.

“Just like the community, we are growing,” he said. “We are adding services in Rock Hill and expanding what we are able to do for people.”

Nosacka said this facility — with 12 treatment rooms and an ambulance dispatch station — is set to be open by the end of the year. According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, there are 13 other places across the state that provide freestanding emergency care.
