Easley Plea Deal Today?
Former Governor Mike Easley is expected to appear in a Wake County courtroom today. Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens will hold a hearing at noon in the long-running state and federal investigation into the former governor's finances. Easley is expected to attend the hearing. Easley has not been formally indicted, but there are indications he may agree to a plea deal at today's hearing. He's been under a federal grand jury investigation for more than a year for questions about his dealings with campaign contributors while in office. Late last year, the state elections board fined Easley's campaign one hundred thousand dollars for failing to report donated flights. Rowan County DA Bill Kenerly has led a criminal probe into the flights. And earlier this year, Easley's former right-hand man Ruffin Poole was indicted on 51 corruption-related charges. Poole accepted a plea deal in exchange for cooperating with investigators.
