Efforts are underway to get three cows back home after they were found washed ashore on the Cape Lookout National Seashore a few weeks after Hurricane Dorian in September.
The Associated Press reported that the cows belong to a herd that roams freely on Cedar Island, across the sound. When Dorian generated an 8-foot “mini tsunami,” it washed them and dozens of other animals away, including 28 wild horses that died.
“Right now we’re trying to develop a plan to round them up," said B.G. Horvat, a spokesman for the Seashore. "The superintendent has been trying to locate the true owner to no success. You know, if we find the owner, the owner will have 30 days to come up with a plan. That’s typically how this goes.”
Horvat says the cows probably swam at least a few miles in order to get to shore after being swept away.
He added the cows have been eating and drinking and seem to be doing well.
