Cabarrus County has a new commissioner after local attorney Jeff Jones was sworn in Tuesday night. He was appointed by Cabarrus County Clerk of Superior Court Bill Baggs after the remaining commissioners couldn’t come to a consensus on a replacement for Chris Measmer within the required 20-day window. Measmer was appointed to the N.C. Senate, replacing Sen. Paul Newton. Newton resigned to take the position of general counsel for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Measmer was appointed last month. Remaining commissioners tried to appoint LaMarie Austin-Stripling, but were blocked by a lawsuit.
The Independent Tribune reports Jones was not among the 39 people who applied for the commission vacancy.
