  • For most people, a job is one of the focal points of life. But for too many, the jobs they're able to get don't provide adequate income, stability and a path to progress. What role does workforce development play in economic mobility? Join us at noon on Oct. 28 for a virtual panel to explore this question. We'll be highlighting research from UNC Charlotte about communities of color and their access to technology and employment, as well as strategies from around the region to help prepare workers for the jobs of tomorrow. We'll also hear from a national expert on connecting historically underserved communities to tech jobs and how we can create a more diverse, inclusive tech ecosystem. The event is free.

    Panelists:
+ Janet LaBar is president and CEO of the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, which heads economic development efforts for the 15-county Charlotte region.
+ Dr. Fallon Wilson is a co-founder of #BlackTechFutures Research Institute and the former Research Director of Black Tech Mecca. A public interest technologist, much of her research has focused on first generation black college students’ alternative tech pathways and tech ecosystems.
+ Dr. Tianca Crocker is an assistant professor in the UNC Charlotte School of Social Work and a fellow with the National Digital Inclusion Alliance. Her work focuses on increasing economic and social inclusion in an increasingly digital world, and technology access and connectivity as a means to alleviate poverty and increase opportunity. Crocker is also a Gambrell Faculty Fellow, investigating whether a lack of access to digital resources is holding back workers who could otherwise compete for those jobs.

    Moderator:
Ely Portillo is assistant director for outreach and strategic partnerships at the Urban Institute. A former journalist who covered business in the Charlotte region, he will moderate the discussion.

  • It's that time of year! The Coalition for Cultural Compassion is beyond excited to be offering our annual Visit with Santa in person once again! Because your health and safety is just as important to us as celebrating the diversity of the winter season, our 2021 event will be held outdoors and on a smaller scale than our previous Santa events. Here's what you can expect: * Photo Opportunities With Santa! We are thrilled that this year we are partnering with Santas Just Like Me and will welcome Santa Bill to our event! Your family will be able to tell Santa their holiday wishes and, though we will not have a professional photographer on site this year, we welcome you to take all the photos you would like! Our helper elves will also be at the ready if you would like them to use your camera or phone to capture the magic of the visit for your whole family! * Hot Cocoa and Cookies! Our volunteers will be ready to pass out Hot Cocoa to keep you warm and our homemade cookies will be packaged for safety so you can enjoy without worry! (Allergy friendly and gluten free options will be available!) * Outdoor Games and Photo Booth (weather permitting) * Ample lot parking Appointments to see Santa are not required, but they are recommended to cut down on wait time! (You only need one appointment per family) We do ask that all guests over 3 wear masks when near those not in their group (masks CAN come off for photos!) We are so sorry, but bathrooms will not be open to guests this year except for emergency cases, so please do your best to plan accordingly. We realize this can be very tricky with little ones, so we will do everything we can to help if a bathroom situation arises. As always, this event is FREE to ALL, though we do appreciate donations to our organization.

  • Pick up your instrument and join us for a jazz jam. Whether you’re an experienced jazz musician, exploring your skills, or your instrument is rusty, this jazz jam session is for everyone. And if you’ve never been to one, JazzArts Academy alumni, students, and instructors will show you how the music is born! House Band leading the jam session will include Ocie Davis on drums, Troy Conn on guitar, and more. Jazz music and it’s most pivotal innovations were born out of jam sessions. Jazz is a communal music, where musicians incorporate call and response, and bounce ideas off of each other. This is the essence of jazz music. So a public jam session is simply a musical get-together where musicians come together to play jazz standards. Everyone is invited. Join in the experience. #MusicEverywhereClt #UptownCLTNC #Jazzclt #CLTMusic #MusicMatters #JazzLivesHereCLT #JazzIsLife #infusionfund JazzArts Charlotte event partners include: Knight Foundation, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Infusion Fund, and North Carolina Arts Council.
