As a child, Miles Hoffman played the violin. He switched to the viola when he was 21 because he liked what he calls the instrument's "rich, deep, chocolaty" sound.
Today, Hoffman is the violist and the artistic director of the Washington, D.C.-based chamber music ensemble, the American Chamber Players. In Studio 4A, the group performs music by the often overlooked English composer, Frank Bridge.
