Brian Eno is an iconic and omnipresent pioneer in the world of ambient music, but he's gained real staying power while working behind the boards. He's produced albums for some of modern music's most influential artists, including Devo, David Bowie, U2, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel and Talking Heads.
Given that it's been five years since Eno's last solo album, maybe he's happier in the director's chair these days. But that hasn't stopped him from coming on strong with his own Small Craft on a Milk Sea, an eclectic mix of haunting ambience and tense electronics. Swimming in a sea of distorted textures, "Horse" lands squarely in the latter half of that equation: Its busy drums and oscillating hums simmer as guitarist John Abrahams sends his six-string into a frenzy of wails. It all sounds like the perfect accompaniment to a countdown sequence that can only culminate in nuclear annihilation.
