A driver who hit and killed a man near Saturday morning was driving without a license and appears to be an illegal immigrant, the Charlotte Observer reports. Bill Sweezer, a volunteer for the Rock Hill Rays swim team, was taking his wife and kids to a swim meet Saturday morning when he crashed into the back of an idle CMPD cruiser on Interstate 277 near Carson Boulevard. CMPD officers were helping a stranded motorist. Sweezer got out of his car to talk to the officers. A Toyota 4Runner then slammed into Sweezer's car, and struck and killed Sweezer. The officers and Sweezer's family were also injured. Police arrested Delvin Joel Marin-Contreras. According to the Observer, Marin-Contreras had been cited twice before for not having a license, but police didn't check his immigration status because those charges didn't result in arrests. Marin-Contreras told authorities he is from Honduras. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office cannot find any records of his immigration status. He now faces misdemeanor charges of death by vehicle and driving without a license. Those charges take priority over an deportation proceedings.
