Hiromi: Newport Jazz 2011
The Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara — who records as Hiromi — is a dynamo of a performer. She'll reach into the piano and dampen the strings; she'll bob and grunt and contort and otherwise rock, all while playing dizzying runs of jaw-dropping technique. For the first of her two shows at the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival, she was unaccompanied, much like on her 2010 album Place To Be. But she played with the force of four hands from the expansive Fort Stage overlooking Narragansett Bay.
