The North Carolina Senate passed a bill Tuesday to require state law enforcement agencies to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The “North Carolina Border Protection Act” would require the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Adult Correction, the State Highway Patrol and the State Bureau of Investigation to cooperate with ICE.
The bill would also require the Office of State Budget and Management to determine whether undocumented immigrants use state-funded public benefit programs. It would punish any city or county that creates so-called sanctuary cities and prohibit UNC system campuses from blocking ICE enforcement.
The bill will now go to the North Carolina House of Representatives.
