Does Development Mean Displacement?
Without targeted policies and planning, development may negatively impact those least likely to benefit from the prosperity of our city and region – particularly Black and Latinx families who disproportionately face systemic barriers to upward economic mobility. But the mechanisms that cause displacement are complex and not easily assigned to one specific cause or group of players. Recent research both challenges assumptions about displacement and demonstrates continued barriers for lower-income households. Understanding the complexity of displacement creates opportunities for locally targeted anti-displacement strategies.
Join the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute and keynote speaker Dr. Karen Chapple, a founder of the Urban Displacement Project and Director of the School of Cities at the University of Toronto to dive into the nuance and solutions. A reception honoring the Gambrell Faculty Fellows will immediately follow the Forum.
The Forum will also feature an introduction and discussion of data tools that help us understand and measure our progress around economic mobility in our city and region.
