Indigeneity in Gaming: Behind and On the Screen

Indigeneity in Gaming: Behind and On the Screen

Writer, game designer, and journalist Chesley “Chez” Oxendine (Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina) discusses the role of Indigenous developers in bringing game stories to life, as well as the slowly increasing prominence of Native characters in gaming culture. He aims to discuss successful portrayals (such as Human Head’s “Prey”) and less accurate representation (the stereotypical Native characters in fighting games.) He also hopes to demonstrate that the gaming industry, and tech in general, can be a great pathway out of the poverty that many Natives face in their formative years - and that the industry needs more Indigenous voices.
