Principal Emily Miles looks out at students who made signs to celebrate her being named CMS principal of the year.

"You care about each and every child in this school," Winston said. "You are passionate about building the capacity of your staff, Dr. Miles. And you have a passion for equity."

CMS cited her work with Sterling's "master mentor" program, which has experienced teachers working with colleagues who are new to the profession.

Sterling has about 800 preK-5 students, most of them Hispanic and bilingual, Miles said. The youngest of her three children is in prekindergarten at Sterling.
