Mecklenburg County Commissioner's Replacement to be Picked Next Week
Democratic Party officials will pick a replacement next week for the late Mecklenburg County Commissioner Valerie Woodard. Democratic elected officials and precinct officer who live in district 3 will pick Woodard's successor on Monday. They will have to decide who will finish her current term and who will serve the next two years. Woodard had no opposition so the party is in control of the seat. The Commissioner died earlier this month of a rare blood disorder. Now, at least three people have shown interest in the position. Mecklenburg Democratic Party Chair Joel Ford says he wants someone who represents her spirit. "It was widely known that she was a fierce campaigner, but that the citizens in the county commission district 3 kept sending her back to the county commission. And I think they kept sending her back because she kept doing a fabulous job," says Ford. Dwayne Collins, Maurice Hamphill, and Martina Ackridge are considering a run for the position.
