Organizations react to Harrison appointment to school board
Governor Perdue has appointed Bill Harrison to the state school board and is now asking members to name him chair. As chair, Harrison would also be Chief Executive Officer of the state's public school system. This means he would be in charge of both creating education policy and implementing it. North Carolina School Boards Association head Ed Dunlap isn't worried that the combined position gives too much power to a single individual. He says the current structure has been difficult to navigate. "There was uncertainty about who was in charge. Was the state board in charge? Was the superintendent in charge? Was the deputy state superintendent in charge? There was uncertainty about who to go to," says Harrison. North Carolina Association of Educators President Sherry Strickland says right now she's unsure what the changes will mean. She only hopes they will help advance the association's agenda.
