The US Postal Service has quietly posted a notice at twelve Charlotte area offices announcing plans to close at 5 p.m. beginning March 2nd. A USPS spokesperson refused to give a list of the locations, saying customers should just check the sign at the post office. But the local American Postal Workers Union received a list, and it includes the airport station which has traditionally stayed open until 10 p.m. and the South Providence office which is open until 8. USPS says it's cutting hours to save money as it faces a record declines in business. But local union president Leroy Moyer says the shorter hours will save little, since the Postal Service has promised employees working at those offices they will not have their hours cut. Instead, Moyer says the customers will suffer: "People who now get off of work aren't gonna have a place to go. And so most of them now are going to be forced to show up on Saturday morning and unfortunately maybe face much longer lines than they would have had they been able to go to in the evenings." A USPS spokesperson declined to say how much the Postal Service hopes to save by closing early.
