CMS layoffs expected before school year ends
In recent weeks, CMS budget planners got the heads-up about returning the five million dollars to the county. Superintendent Peter Gorman says deciding where to cut has been tough because more than 60 percent of the budget is already spent. He says, "We are not looking at reductions that would be in the classroom. We're working first and foremost to stay away from what's going on in the classroom. We will look at doing some reductions- there will be some reductions in staff that will occur between now and the end of the year." Gorman says he wants to wait until the school board and people affected are notified before he gives full details of the cuts. He says the district is also looking at cutting back on planned purchases that typically include school bus replacements. Gorman says the layoffs will start in the coming weeks.
