The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra has chosen the head of the London Chamber Orchestra, Christopher Warren-Green, as its new conductor. Warren-Green has served as Music Director for the London Chamber Orchestra since 1988 and has regularly worked with the Royal Philharmonic, and BBC concert orchestras. He says he wants to continue the work the Charlotte Symphony's current Music Director Christof Perik established and introduce more people to the symphony. "One of the most important roles of a Music Director is to be obviously involved in all types of music. It's not to just specialize in one particular type, but to be involved in things that will bring the family in, especially young people in. It's a little bit like indoctrination," explains Warren-Green. The symphony's search committee said it was looking for a Music Director who would be active in the community and live here. The current conductor, Christof Perick, is based in Germany and works with several orchestras. Warren-Green is taking the job at a challenging time. Last week, the Arts and Science Council announced it was cutting its funding to the symphony by $1 million. Warren-Green says symphony leaders have been upfront about the orchestra's financial problems throughout the selection process. He says he'll be active in fundraising. Warren-Green will start September of 2010, but he will conduct a concert in Charlotte next February.
