A driver is dead after his SUV rear-ended a Charlotte Area Transit System bus this morning on Park road in south Charlotte. WFAE's Simone Orendain has more: A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police report says Chad Haynes was shifting to a right lane when his SUV clipped a vehicle on the right, then slammed into the back of a CATS bus waiting at a red light. Haynes died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Fire department spokesman Mark Basnight says the front end of Haynes' SUV was crushed and Haynes was pinned. "There was significant damage to this SUV, so the impact was significant, to where he was briefly trapped in his vehicle," says Basnight. Emergency crews also transported five bus passengers to area hospitals with minor injuries. The police report says Haynes was not wearing a seatbelt. He turned 38 less than a week ago.
