The lights were lit this week on a brand new public art installation at the intersection of West Trade Street and the I-77 overpass. It's called "Passing Through Light." 60 separate lights shine on the steel beams and concrete walls. They cycle through multiple sequences of colors and movements. State Senator Malcolm Graham, speaking on behalf of Johnson C. Smith University, says he hopes the art will draw more people from Uptown Charlotte toward the school and the businesses around it. "We saw that the art project can be a compelling reason for folks all over the city to come to West Trade Street to see what was happening on West Trade Street," says Graham. Artist Erwin Redl was commissioned to create it last June. The project cost $200,000 and was funded by Johnson C. Smith and the city's one percent for public art ordinance.
