About a third of CMS schools require kids to wear uniforms like a solid color shirt and khakis. Most of them have lots of students from low-income families. Regina Boyd is the principal of Winterfield Elementary school on Charlotte's east side. "It's actually a strategy for us to balance the playing field and take that stress off of, 'What am I going to buy for my children? What are they going to wear everyday?" says Boyd. She also says it's a good way to reach out to groups to help schools like Winterfield. She says it's easier to ask for a uniform than jeans and t-shirts. This year Winterfield is one of several schools in the Charlotte area to receive a couple hundred new uniforms from Belk. The company is donating about 3,300 uniforms to schools in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus and Union counties.
