A 1-year-old boy died Thursday after his foster mother left him in a hot car for several hours in Pineville.

The Pineville Police Department says officers found the boy around 5 p.m. inside a car at the McMullen Creek Shopping Center off Pineville-Matthews Road. According to police, the boy’s foster mother works at the shopping center and called 911 after realizing she had left the child in the car.

The child was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Temperatures were in the mid-80s in the Charlotte area on Thursday afternoon. There have been 37 such deaths nationwide this year, according to the organization Kids and Cars.

Police had not announced any charges as of early Friday morning.

This story was updated to clarify that the woman who called police was the child's foster parent.
