North Carolina State Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs was officially sworn in this morning, more than six months after the election. Riggs, a Democrat, defended her 734-vote victory from challenger Republican Jefferson Griffin, who tried multiple times to have thousands of ballots thrown out in order to reverse the outcome. Riggs said she was grateful for her supporters but that the challenges should not have happened.
"Voters should not have to fight tooth and nail to have their lawful votes counted. Disappointed politicians should not use courts to try and get a different election outcome," she said.
Griffin conceded the race and dropped his challenges last week after a federal court ruled against him.
