Charlotte Talks: Improving Our Park System

A map on the ParkScore ranking website shows areas of Charlotte most in need of parks in red (very high) and orange (high).
Trust for Public Lands

Tuesday, May 28, 2019

The new national park rankings are out, and once again Charlotte is at the bottom. Guest host David Boraks sits down with a panel to discuss this.

The annual ParkScore ranking by the Trust for Public Land praises the city for average park size, but dings us when it comes to park accessibility and per-resident spending. Charlotte ranks 96th among the nation's 100 largest cities - about the same as the last six years.

We talk with the director of the Mecklenburg County park system about that, about whether money for parks in the county budget is enough, and more.

Guests

Lee Jones, director of Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation

Heidi Pruess, chair of the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Commission, an advisory body to the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners

Charlie McCabe, director of the Trust for Public Land’s Center for City Park Excellence
