Digital Mortgage Company Says It's Bringing 1,000 Jobs To Charlotte

A digital mortgage-lending company says it's bringing 1,000 jobs to Charlotte over the next five years.

Better.com announced Monday that it's opened an office at the WeWork co-working site in South End and plans to hire 100 employees by the end of the year.

The move marks the latest addition to Charlotte's growing tech and finance sector. Lowe's announced earlier this year that it's opening a major tech hub in South End, Honeywell is relocating its headquarters here, and so is Truist, the name of the company coming out of a planned merger of SunTrust and BB&T.

Mayor Vi Lyles said in a statement that the addition of Better.com helps Charlotte "grow into the technology-based city we want to be."

Ally Financial partnered with Better.com earlier in the year, and the city of Charlotte said in a news release that the new office will serve as a "home base" for loan officers from the two companies.

Better.com launched in 2016 and funds $450 million in mortgages per month.

Better.com CEO Vishal Garg said in a news release that the company wanted to "tap into" Charlotte's workforce.

“As a rapidly growing startup, we see an entrepreneurial hunger and spirit in the city of Charlotte that is akin to what we used to see in places like downtown Manhattan in the 1980s and Silicon Valley in the 1990s,” Garg said.

The Charlotte Observer reports that salaries will range from $65,000-$100,000 and that the city did not offer incentives.
