No Layoffs, Furloughs In Proposed Charlotte Budget During Pandemic

Charlotte City Manager Marcus Jones has recommended a budget that does not increase taxes or include layoffs or furloughs to close a projected $22 million shortfall related to the coronavirus pandemic.

In presenting his budget to City Council on Monday night, Jones said his $2.5 billion plan would not eliminate any services or use the city’s reserve funds to offset the loss. Instead, it would fill the gap by reducing discretionary expenses, shifting funds and eliminating vacant positions.

The city has about 7,500 employees.

City employees would be eligible for a 3% raise and public safety employees could get a raise of up to 6.5%. The typical homeowner would see a $1.24 increase a month for water and sewer. Jones’ recommendation also includes a $50 million affordable housing bond.

A public hearing on the budget will be held next Monday. Council will adopt a new budget in June.

You can see more about the budget on the city's website.
