Only the Ball was White: A History of Native and Black American Baseball
As great as Jackie Robinson was, he was not the first American Black baseball player. In fact, two great Native American baseball players made significant contributions to our nation’s pastime in the early 20th century. This presentation by Stanton Green, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at Monmouth University, will describe the significance of these players from the beginning of baseball as an American sport through the Jim Crow and Civil Rights Era where Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby and so many other Black ballplayers led the way toward racial equality in the U.S.

Halloween: It's Nothing to be Afraid of
From a Celtic day of the dead to contemporary America’s celebration of all things spooky, Halloween has a rich and diverse history. From a folklorist’s perspective, Dr. Stephen Criswell, USCL Director of Native American Studies and Professor of English and Folklore, explores the origins and development of the holiday of Halloween as a pre-Christian festival, a Christian holy day designed to help convert early Europeans, and a contemporary carnivalesque celebration for children and adults.
