  • On Friday, May 7, the Ziad Jazz Quartet brings this monumental album back to life on the Virtual Jazz at the Bechtler stage. To help recreate the timeless magic of “Kind of Blue,” several guest musicians will accompany the Ziad Jazz Quartet. Trumpeter Lynn Grissett, whose credentials include playing with Prince as part of the "New Power Generation," takes center stage as he fills the considerable shoes of Miles Davis himself. Saxophonist Adrian Crutchfield’s high-energy delivery has made him one of the most in-demand touring musicians around, having played shows with Prince, Lionel Ritchie, and CeeLo Green. Returning to round out the guest ensemble is drummer Kobie Watkins who has been called “The Swing Master” in his hometown of Chicago where he developed a ferocious style of playing, always with a magnetic smile. Watkins has played, toured, and recorded with Sonny Rollins, Kurt Elling, Branford Marsalis, and Christian McBride, just to name a few. Members of the Ziad Jazz Quartet include Ziad Rabie on Tenor Saxophone, Ron Brendle on bass, and Sean Higgins on Piano.
  • Charlotte Center for Literary Arts, Inc. (“Charlotte Lit”) proudly presents an evening with Jessica Jacobs, as part of their inaugural Chapbook Lab free poetry reading series. Jessica will be sharing new pieces from a soon to be published collection of essays and poems exploring spirituality, Torah, and Midrash (Four Way Books, 2024). After years of trying to leave organized religion in her past, Jacobs found herself drawn to the Jewish teachings of her youth. “What I loved best was Midrash—interpretations and extrapolations of the Torah written by rabbis in argument and collaboration across geography and time—loving it for the deep-time perspective and wisdom I found there and how I felt welcomed to think alongside them and even add my voice to this unending conversation.” Recently Jessica completed a five-year journey creating poetry responding to the Book of Genesis in relationship to other ancient texts exploring how they speak to, inform, and trouble our current world. Join Jessica for an evening of community and connection, as she explores those age-old questions—Why am I here? What does it mean to be a good partner, a good person? 6:00 P.M.
