  • Dionysia Theater Group presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents, run by 3 equally quirky adults, vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was nominated for 6 Tonys, winning 2 - including Best Book! You are definitely in for a treat, so come join us at the bee!! THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). • Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) was a man of many facets. Not only did he paint over 6,000 paintings, he also designed sets and costumes for Stravinsky’s “Le Sacre du Printemps” and other ballets and operas. He wrote more than 20 books on art, culture, and philosophy, carried out extensive archeological research and excavations in his native Russia and his adopted homeland of India, and developed a reputation for his focus on the spiritual positivity of nature and humanity.

Thanks to the generosity of the late Alice Tate, UNC Charlotte owns 37 paintings and drawings by Roerich. Many of the paintings were produced while Roerich was in the field and are on very fragile paper, cardboard, wood, and any other material he could easily find. They are currently housed in Special Collections at Atkins Library.

For the first time in the UNC Charlotte Galleries, a selection of Roerich’s works from Special Collections will be on public view. These painted observations of the majestic Himalayan landscape are both straightforward and abstract, representing Roerich’s view of nature as a truly transcendental creation beyond our complete understanding. Several of the pieces have been restored and framed thanks to an anonymous gift.

  • The Bible is no relic. The stories it tells mirror human behavior of our own time. It is, in fact, one of the most powerful and influential texts we know. Barbara Thiede, Ph.D.’s Male Friendship, Homosociality, and Women in the Hebrew Bible: Malignant Fraternities explores how male relationships—both divine and mortal—are depicted in these texts. Male friendships and alliances are crucial to both biblical culture and our contemporary one. They undergird biblical culture as they undergird our own. Disturbingly, both in the Bible and in our own time, male relationships often rely on shared sexual experience and sexual violence against women. We should ask: why do the Bible’s toxic male relationships seem so familiar and frighteningly real even in our own time? Doing so will empower and enable us in finding solutions, answers, and hope.│clas.charlotte.edu/ps

  • Halloween is the one day a year where it's more than acceptable to heighten the drama of life through elaborate costumes and wigs... that is, unless you work in opera. In which case, your day-to-day career combines costumes and characterization with a love of history, languages, cultures and singing. It's a career that UNC Chapel Hill graduate and Charlotte resident Melinda Whittington has grown through international tours and even a performance at the world famous Metropolitan Opera. And it's one that she wants to share with audiences in North Carolina.
