We are also excited to bring you Dreamroot, a Durham-based musical collective from Durham NC that combines pre-written and improvised sections, melding R&B forms with modern jazz solos that all fit nicely into the length of a longish pop song." Dreamroot released their debut album Phases in May of 2020, hoping to put out positive energy during a dark time. Members: Theous Jones (drums), Serena Wiley (saxophone/flute/spoken word/vocals), Ittai Korman (acoustic and electric bass), Lynn Grissett (trumpet) and Joe MacPhail (piano and keyboards). We’ll also have the JazzArts Youth All-Stars to showcase the future stars of jazz right here in Charlotte. For July, we begin with jazz standards by the Ariel Pocock Trio. Ariel Pocock’s music has a “true facility for…sinewy jazz piano [and] breezy, achingly plain-spoken vocal chops…” (Seattle Times). Ariel has recorded 3 albums and we’ve enjoyed Ariel at the Jazz Festival and in the JAZZ ROOM several times, including the 2019 Holiday Edition Piano Night and March 2019 Women in Jazz. This trio will feature Ron Brendle on bass, Troy Conn and Scott Sawyer on guitar, and John Spurrier on drums. As the sun sets, we’ll spice it up with Jazziando. This quintet, co-led by Percussionist Billy Marrero and Trumpeter Alberto Carrasquillo, performs instrumental Latin Jazz with Brazilian infused rhythms, a drum beat beyond the generic salsa, jazzy versatility and a rock heavy Cuban downbeat. Sit back and enjoy their sound, or get on the dance floor moving to the mambos. We’ll also have the JazzArts Youth All-Stars to showcase the future stars of jazz right here in Charlotte.
