  • This month, we gather with a few of the influential jazz trumpet players in the region, to talk all things trumpet. Ashlin Parker, founder of the Trumpet Mafia, will give us insights into the role of trumpet, what the Trumpet Mafia has been up to, and key moments in his career. We look forward to sharing insights that get us ready to celebrate the reopening of the JAZZ ROOM with a Trumpet Summit, later in the week. Tune in to the monthly Conversation with Curtis series to discover outstanding musicians, past and present, regional and international. Our interactive events are a chance for you to engage with the artists who are usually up on the stage. These conversations are led by jazz expert, JAZZ ROOM MC, and CurtJazz radio host Curtis Davenport. Join us free on YouTube or Facebook at the downbeat of the show. • This four week online interactive workshop explores the life of legend Charlie Parker. JazzArts Charlotte partners with UNC Charlotte to offer this workshop led by Dr. Kelsey Klotz as part of a full celebration and recognition of Charlie Parker’s Centennial +1. Legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, nicknamed “Bird”, led the development of bebop with his blazing virtuosity and revolutionary ideas. An icon for the hipster subculture, Parker personified the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual rather than just an entertainer. His tragically short life was as fast paced as his music. Registration https://77397.blackbaudhosting.com/77397/page.aspx?pid=208&csid=3506FE0B-149D-459e-A48B-98FE6E322FF4

  • Sustain Charlotte is excited to announce the return of Biketoberfest in 2021! They are once again encouraging Charlotteans to discover fun and easy ways to get around Charlotte without driving. For the first time we will be extending this year’s route beyond South End and Center City north through Villa Heights, Optimist Park, Midtown, and NoDa. The route will showcase some new bike infrastructure, the Blue Line, plus new and old local businesses, parks, and greenways along the way. The unique, scavenger hunt-style event will take riders along a bike-friendly route with stops at fun destinations and will culminate with an after-party at Triple C Brewing Co. There will also be a shorter, more family-friendly route, so bring the kids! Along the route participants will collect stamps in their official Biketoberfest passport. The stamps will then be traded in for raffle tickets at the after party! The more destinations you visit, the more chances you’ll have to win. Sustain Charlotte started this event in 2014 as a fun way to promote biking for transportation to Charlotte-Mecklenburg residents. Not only does bicycling for transportation promote a healthier lifestyle, but it also reduces transportation costs as well as air pollution and carbon emissions.

  • How and why do youth get involved in gangs that have white power signs, symbols, and ideologies? Research by Shannon Reid and co-author Matthew Valasik focuses on understanding the evidence behind the development, growth, and influence of alt-right groups within the white power movement. The book seeks to provide parents, policy makers, researchers, and law enforcement with a better understanding of how to identify and deal with these types of gangs. The work is aimed at understanding how to prevent youth from joining these groups, help them leave these groups once they are involved, and help law enforcement properly reduce gang or group-based crime and violence. To learn more about this timely topic, join Reid for the kickoff of the 2021-22 Personally Speaking series, on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. with a virtual event hosted by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, with The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City and the J. Murrey Atkins Library. During her talk, Reid will draw from her book Alt-Right Gangs: A Hazy Shade of White and present how prevention and intervention strategies can make a long-term impact. The talk will begin promptly at 7 p.m. Reid is an associate professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology. She earned a doctorate in criminology, law and society in 2013 from the University of California, Irvine. She joined the faculty at UNC Charlotte in 2013. Her research is focused on youth violence, especially youth involved in gangs, including white power gangs such as Proud Boys; and on identifying prevention, intervention, and suppression efforts with a long-term impact on this issue. Her research has drawn significant attention, including in the national media, as this topic and its solutions continue to spark discussion.
