During a Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board meeting this month, a former Myers Park High School student said she never reported her sexual assault because of the message of discouraging filing reports that she received from the administration. Her assault she said, was like many others and took place in the wooded area surrounding the school.

Education dominated the news this week — despite most schools being on summer break. U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona visited Charlotte, and the CMS board held its first in-person meeting since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. That meeting saw a debate over how schools handle racism — and a protest outside the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center over how allegations of sexual assault were handled at Myers Park High.

At Tuesday night’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board meeting, new principal appointments were approved. So was the renewal of principal contracts. But left off the list was the approval of embattled Myers Park High School principal Mark Bosco. CMS called it an administrative oversight because while Bosco is still employed, he is on leave.

A group of concerned students and parents gathered outside the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center on Tuesday to protest the handling of allegations of sexual assaults at Myers Park High School.

There are multiple reports of a loud "boom" that shook the Myers Park and SouthPark areas of Charlotte around 11:15 a.m. Thursday. Local emergency responders say they are unsure what the cause may have been.
