Latest Florence Death Toll In The Carolinas

There have been at least 37 reported deaths in the Carolinas that are being attributed to Florence. Here is a list of the fatalities in the two states. This list will be updated.

North Carolina: 31 total deaths

  • Four deaths in Duplin County: Three people died in separate incidents on Sept. 14 when their vehicles were swept away by flash flooding on roadways, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. DPS confirmed another death in Duplin County.
  • Two deaths in New Hanover County: A 41-year-old female and her seven-month-old son died Sept. 14 when a tree fell on their home in Wilmington, according to DPS.
  • Two deaths in Lenoir County: DPS reported a 68-year-old male died Sept. 14 when he was electrocuted while plugging in a generator. A 77-year-old man fell and died due to a cardiac event while outside checking on his dogs during the storm on the night of Sept. 13/14, DPS reported.
  • One death in Wayne County: An 81-year-old man fell and struck his head while packing to evacuate on Sept. 14, DPS said.
  • Two deaths in Cumberland County: A husband and wife died in a house fire on Sept. 14, DPS said.
  • One death in Gaston County: Three-month-old Kade Gill died after a tree fell on a mobile home near Dallas Sept. 16.
  • Two deaths in Union County: One-year-old Kaiden Lee Welch died Sept. 16 when a car his mother was driving hit a flooded section of the road after she went around a barricade. His mother was able to get herself and her son out of the car but lost her grip on him in the rushing waters. And the body of Clayborn Lee Wright was found next to his car in floodwaters Monday morning. The Union County Sheriff's Office said the car was carried away during the storm. 
  • One death in Onslow County: A 56-year-old man was found dead on his back porch. The Charlotte Observer reports that he had a fall and his home showed water damage.
  • One death in Scotland County: A 73-year-old man was found Sept. 16 in a vehicle submerged underwater, according to the Charlotte Observer.
  • One death in Cleveland County: A 56-year-old man died Sept. 16 after his tractor-trailer hydroplaned and ran off the road, the Observer reports.
  • One death in Columbus County: A 61-year-old was killed Sept. 16 while evacuating on a moped, the Observer reports.
  • The Associated Press reports six more deaths attributed to Florence have occurred in North Carolina. 
  • North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper says two more deaths attributed to Florence have ocurred in North Carolina.
  • North Carolina Department of Public Safety confirmed 5 more deaths due to Florence have occurred in the state, as of Sept. 20.

South Carolina: 6 total deaths

  • One death in Union County: Amber Dawn Lee, 61, died Sept. 14 when the car she was driving struck a tree, according to the Associated Press.
  • Two deaths in Horry County: The Myrtle Beach Sun News reported Mark Carter King, 63, and Debra Collins Rion, 61, died Sept. 15 of carbon monoxide poisoning from running a generator indoors.
  • One death in Georgetown County: Michael Dalton Prince, 23, died Sept. 16 after the truck he was riding in lost control on a flooded road in Georgetown County, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. The truck’s driver and another passenger survived.
  • One death in Lexington County: WIS reported Rhonda Rebecca Hartley, 30, died in an early morning crash Sept. 16 near Gilbert. The state Department of Public Safety said Hartley was driving a pickup truck when she drove into standing water, lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.  
  • One death in Kershaw County: Jeffery B. Youngren, 42, died in a crash the morning of Sept. 15, according to the Charlotte Observer. DPS said the weather was a factor when the driver of a pickup truck left the roadway and hit a support beam.
