Greyboy Allstars: Invigorated and Invigorating

The Greyboy Allstars.
The Greyboy Allstars.

Mixing the upbeat sounds of funk, jazz and boogaloo, the members of San Diego's Greyboy Allstars traffic in groove-oriented acid jazz that isn't conducive to holding still.

The band came together in 1993 when DJ Greyboy (a.k.a. Andreas Stevens) started playing with saxophonist Karl Denson; the pair quickly formed a band and began gigging in the San Diego area. The group started a record label, Greyboy Records, and in 1995 released its debut album, West Coast Boogaloo. A live disc (Live) followed in 1997, and was quickly followed by another studio set, A Town Called Earth.

What Happened to Television?, Greyboy Allstars' first album in nearly a decade, finds the band sounding fresh and energized. From the hot funk of "Back in the Game" to the classic soul of Nancy Wilson's "How Glad I Am" (the disc's only cover), What Happened to Television? sounds both invigorated and invigorating.
