Josh Ritter Goes to the 'Dogs'

Idaho-born musician Josh Ritter has been compared to Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan.

Guitar in hand, Ritter joins us in the Bryant Park Project studios, where he gives us a taste of his new record, The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter.

Ritter says he hasn't stopped growing — musically, that is. For his previous release, The Animal Years, he remembers working out every last detail. Striving so hard for perfection left him hungering for something a little less controlled.

"That kind of thing, you react to it by kind of wanting to blow something up and punch a wall on occasion," he says. "It's so much fun to play this stuff live — it's just kind of wild music."

You can hear the free-flowing result in this live performance of a signature track, "To the Dogs or Whoever."

On our blog, an open thread: Anyone hear shades of Dylan in this performance — maybe the influence of "I Want You," from Blonde on Blonde?
