Point Guard Larry Drew II Leaves Tar Heels
Junior Tar Heels point guard Larry Drew II has quit the team, just four games after losing his starting position. But Drew was still an important part of the team and has been instrumental in No. 23 North Carolina's four-game winning streak coming off the bench. Williams said the loss of Drew is a "major blow" to the team. "I was shocked. I'm disappointed," Williams said at a press conference Friday afternoon (click here to watch). Williams said he hadn't spoken to Drew. Instead, Williams says Drew's father call him at 9 a.m. Friday morning to inform him of the decision. Drew released a prepared statement that says in part: "After careful consideration and consultation with my family, I have decided it's in my best interest to continue my education and basketball career elsewhere." Adds coach Roy Williams: "I regret that Larry and his family feel this is the right thing to do, but again, each individual has to do what they think is best."
