CMPD Officer Convicted For Untruthful Testimony In DWI Case

The Charlotte Observer's Gary Wright and Cleve Wootson Jr. report here on a CMPD officer convicted of contempt of court for his untruthful testimony in an April 15th DWI hearing. Officer Barry Grimes was sentenced to 30 days and given a $500 fine. In the hearing, Grimes testified that the driver he arrested failed two filed sobriety tests and that he remembered the night quite well. He even cited the names of the tests he said he administered. However, video shows that Grimes didn't administer any field sobriety tests. District Judge Sean Smith dismissed the charges. He senced Grimes on Monday. The Observer reports Grimes is free pending appeal, and is suspended without pay. The DA's office is reviewing more than 100 cases in which Grimes was involved.
