Fact Check: SC Governor Overstating Jobs Success
The Associated Press took a closer look at Governor Nikki Haley's frequent boast that 10,000 jobs have been announced in SC since she took office. The numbers show Haley may be overstating her success in the jobs arena. From the AP story: "Thousands of the positions will not arrive in South Carolina for years. Some actually were announced before she took office. Hundreds are the fruit of a deal that Haley tried to derail." After being pressed by the AP, Haley's office revised its jobs count down to about 9,000 jobs. That number includes 4,000 Wal-Mart jobs, which the state did not pay incentives to recruit. Hundreds more are jobs Amazon will fill in SC, despite Governor Haley's outspoken opposition to a sales tax exemption for the online retailer. Haley told the AP that jobs are her priority and she is focusing on rural employment. "All I can tell you is that it's something I'm working on every day," said the governor. Read the AP story here.
