Charlotte's Goodwill Industries is expanding its free technology training program, called Goodwill University, thanks to a $300,000 grant from Google. The organization now will begin offering training in key certifications for information technology careers.

Until now, Goodwill University has offered training only in basic office computer skills. The new funding will pay for more advanced classes for about 825 students over the next three years.

Goodwill University director Dana McDonald says the new training will include specialties where workers are in high demand - computer helpdesk support, Salesforce software, and web development.

"We are going to be able to expand our advanced technology training, which will provide training and industry-recognized credentials that provide people with entry into I.T.-related jobs," McDonald said. "It's going to be their foot in the door to the IT industry."

Google is spending $10 million across the country on initiatives to create economic opportunity. Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont was one of 11 Goodwill groups nationwide to win the grants.
