Drug Court In 1989 a Miami court began an experiment to help repeat drug offenders get their lives back. The experiment was called Drug Court and it spread nationwide. Supporters say the drug court in Mecklenburg county has reduced recidivism rates and helped offenders become productive citizens. However, state budget woes have forced lawmakers to find programs to cut and the Drug Court system fell under the ax. Mecklenburg county leaders have decided to pick up the bill but now counties all over the state must decide whether to fund their own drug courts. We'll look at drug court, what it does to help offenders and whether it will survive economic realities.
