Veterans and West Side Story

Part One: Prosthetics, Homecoming & Education for Veterans For a veteran, making that transition from soldier to student can be difficult. Besides the normal stresses of college life, veterans - especially wounded veterans - deal with many other issues. We'll talk about some of the issues veterans face when coming to a college setting as a student and what colleges and veterans' organizations are doing to help. We'll also meet a wounded veteran who is coming to town this week to speak to college students about how his paralysis pushed him into athletics, and into a sport he never would have thought of before his injury. Guests Scott Winkler - Soldier wounded in Iraq and now competes in the Paralympics. He's not an amputee, but is in a wheelchair. Logan Cason - Coordinator for UNC Charlotte's Veteran Students Outreach program. He's also a former member of the Army, who was just about to ship off to basic training when the 9/11 attacks occurred. Katie Montie - Assistant Director of Disability Services at UNC Charlotte More information about Warrior Champions Part Two: West Side Story Then we'll be joined by some of the national touring cast of West Side Story. This is the 50th anniversary of the film based on the even older musical version of West Side Story, so today, we'll talk about what changes the show has gone through in half a century and why it's still an interesting story to audiences today. Maria and Tony will join us to talk about the music, the love story, the gangs and racial themes. Guests Evy Ortiz - Actress, plays 'Maria' in West Side Story Ross Lekites - Actor, plays 'Tony' in West Side Story West Side Story is at Belk Theater Nov. 1-6. Details and tickets.
