Tavis Smiley. Photo: The Smiley Group, Inc./Kevin Foley Tavis Smiley: America I AM Public radio and TV fans are familiar with broadcaster Tavis Smiley for his shows on the public broadcast networks, and also for his recent book co-authored with Cornel West, The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto. Charlotteans will have the opportunity to know Mr. Smiley's work in a whole new way at the Gantt Center between now and the end of the year. This Saturday, Tavis Smiley's exhibition "America I AM: The African American Imprint" will open at the Gantt. The exhibition is meant to educate museum goers about the contributions of black people over 500 years with hundreds of artifacts. Tavis Smiley joins us to talk broadcasting, collecting pieces of black history and why Charlotte will be the home for this exhibit - the largest that the Gantt has ever held - for the next six months. Guest Tavis Smiley - Host of PRI's The Tavis Smiley Show and Tavis Smiley on PBS. He's also an author and the creative force behind "America I AM: The African American Imprint," which opens at the Gantt Center on June 30. Add and read comments.
