Isabel Wilkerson, The Great Migration (Rebroadcast) The Great Migration, or the movement of millions of African-Americans out of the Southern United States to the North, Midwest and West in the early 20th Century is a historic event that has not received a lot of attention by scholars. Not, at least, until Pulitzer-Prize willing journalist Isabel Wilkerson began researching it and interviewing people who were part of that mass movement out of the South. Wilkerson joins us to talk about how and why the Great Migration happened, how it changed the face of many cities around America, and why it hasn't gotten more attention until now. She's written the book The Warmth of Other Suns chronicling her research, and we'll talk about it.
